We had Chip drama today. Marla got up and went to go feed. She didn't see Chips, but his blanket was lying next to his trough, still buckled! He had wandered over to the side yard and had mud all over his bad leg. UH OH! He was holding it up, so she gave him some bute and called me to check on him since she had to get to work.

I go over to feed and determine from the mud, that he must have been at the "swing" and slipped. Panicked, got his straps wonky, finally got up and went to get a drink, where the blanket finally gave it up and fell off. He was doing his usual shuffle so I gave him a couple of treats and rubbed his leg with equi-block stuff. His blanket was put in the wash so we could have it on him by nightfall.

2 hours later I get a call from Marla. Could I please go check on Chips. Some lady had driven by and seen him. Called 911 because he was "dying". Marla's daughters go to talk to the deputy and try to explain that Chips injury is old, but of course, she's 18, what does she know? So they call Marla. Marla tells the deputy the same thing, even gives him the vets name. Her youngest heard "he is dying" and freaked out. Started crying. GREAT!

I get there and she tells me that she has called Melissa and that I have to lead him into a barn so he can get warm and dry. I told the idiot that you can't lead him and that putting him in a barn will make things worse because he can't move around as much. He is a RESCUE. She goes on to tell me that Dr. Melissa said he DOES lead (sure out of a trailer and into her stall) and that if things were the same when she came back by we'd be sorry. WRONG THING TO SAY to me! Good thing the cop was still there!

I coaxed him a little further back up the hill before he decided he had gone as far as he was gonna go. I hung around until the blanket was dry and put it on him and left. When I went back for dinner feeding, he was back down in his favorite spot near the street!

Marla called her friend at the GA Equine Rescue League and asked that she contact the Dept. of Ag for her just in case this lady decided to report her for neglect. I have got to find out this lady's name and tell her the proper way to go about things!

So many people just turn their heads and do nothing...at least the lady reacted. I hope you can find her and educate her. She might be a real asset if we can channel her energy and concern in a positive way.

You think like I do Barbara. That is exactly what I want to do. I even know where she lives now.

We got the sling modified today and it is MUCH easier for one person to handle. After much bribery, pushing and pulling, we got him back up to the sling. Barely got the straps in place before he collapsed. He didn't immediately go to sleep like last time so we gave him something to help him relax. He slept for over an hour. Got up, ate a little, went potty, then wanted to go down again! We let him back down and as of 8 pm he was still out for the count. We went over and rolled his butt over. She will let us know if he's still down around 10ish so we can roll him again.

We helped Chips cross the Rainbow Bridge this evening. He couldn't get himself up and he really just quit trying. The vet said that he probably realized that it hurt less to lie down and his muscle tone was just not there to get back up again. She was pleased with the way he looked, even with him being down. He had put weight on and his skin was in better condition than when she saw him.

He went peacefully (thank goodness). He will be buried under the Magnolia tree in the morning. Peter was a real trooper to put up with all the crying females

Oh words just do not help - :(

I know everyone always says - at least he knew love, etc. BUT he DID - and you and Marla are to be commended for that...........you couldn't undo what had been done to him a long time ago.

Edie,
Thank you for loving the poor guy, even in his last moments. This is never easy, and there aren't words to make it easier, but we're with you.

So sorry to hear about Chip. At least he knew there were really good caring people along with all the good food and warmth. May he run with the wind.

The pictures of Chips always made me smile. He reminded me of a chocolate chip ice cream cone. It made me smile again to think of how happy and content he was with you and your family. I'm sorry that your time together was so short, but what a wonderful thing you did to rescue him.
