Thrive Feed

Postby IMustBeCrazy » Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:03 pm

Received my first 5 bags of Thrive Feed and have started Damask & Hunny on it today.

For those who are not familiar with this feed check out thrivefeed.com. I am a research freak when it comes to horse feeds and I liked what I saw. Then I followed Dolly's story (featured on the Thrive website) and was convinced it could help my hard keeper TB, Damask, gain muscle and hopefully reduce the amount of feed I have to give him to keep him at a decent weight.

Both horses have been getting 6lbs Mid-South Senior and 8 lbs alfalfa pellets along with free choice Bermuda hay. Currently they are at 1203lbs each.

Day 1-

3 lbs Thrive and 8 lbs alfalfa pellets. I wet down Damask's feed since he tends to choke. Looks like only the alfalfa will need to be wetted. The Thrive disintegrated when water hit it! They both dove in to their meals. Damask isn't that happy with the reduction in quantity. He was nosing all over the place looking for crumbs...

Edie,
Is there finally a distribution means out our way? I would like to try Thrive for our new OTTB...

Unfortunately no. My hubby had to pick up a load in TX and we found a distributor there who would bring him some bags. Want to combine orders? We could save some freight that way.

Day 2-

Damask is trying to run Hunny off her food. Looks like an increase in alfalfa is in order. Wish I could increase the Thrive, but with only 5 bags, they wouldn't last me long enough.

Up to day 4. Nothing really new. They get between 9 and 10 lbs alfalfa and 3.5 lbs of thrive a day. They seem to like it and Damask still goes over to check out Hunny's food. Going to tie him so she can finish. SIGH

12 Days on Thrive. No major changes which is a good thing considering how much LESS food they are getting. Peter is heading back to Dallas and will try and get me another month's worth.

Hunny picks through her feed to eat the Thrive first, then goes for the alfalfa pellets. Good thing since Damask still thinks she has something better than he does!

Does Damask pick through his to get the Thrive first, too? I suppose that's a good sign... it's "taste tested and approved" :!:

OMG, I stupidly bought the car when I should have bought a pickup.   I don't mind driving IF I have a place to stay in between and at the end of the trip. It probably would cost a lot less transportation wise with Peter doing the transporting.

Peter can haul a max of 6 bags and then he has to deal with the smell until he gets them too me. Poor guy. We are looking into a way to build a Thrive Locker on the back of his truck :-)

Starting to see more pointed wither than I'd like so I have changed the ratio of Damask's feed. Now he is getting 5lbs Thrive and 5 lbs alfalfa pellets. Good news is that the extruded form makes it pretty dang hard for him to choke on Thrive. Less time spent wetting down feed! Hunny looks superb at 4 lbs Thrive and 6 lbs alfalfa pellets.

If they will cooperate, I will get pics of them POST Bath!

Peter is coming back in to town with another load of Thrive for me. Got to love that Man. Been married 25 years in June and our anniversary gift to each other is tickets to the October Talladega Nascar Race. How's that for romance?

After several months of Thrive, I have decided to change back to Triple Crown Senior for Damask. This is not a reflection on the quality of the product. I LOVE the results. It is just too hard to get even with Peter making trips out to TX. I have to store too much and end up losing some to either weather or rodents (it is in a paper bag).

So, bottom line is this...if you live in the TX, OK area and can get it, by all means SWITCH! It is worth every dime.
