I took a friend to Keeneland today as a birthday outing - plus it was WEG volunteer day - and they had some reining and dressage presentations. At any rate - we were in the stands watching the races - one race was for 3 years and older - a rather large field - one of the horses was EIGHT years old!!! He's won almost a million dollars in his lifetime - this was a claiming race, as I recall - at any rate - this horse - name of Atticus Kristy - led the whole way and was beaten at the very end by not even a nose......I hope he gets to stop racing sometime soon. Very sad......

In the first race - a horse dumped his rider immediately out of the starting gate - ran the entire race - was third for awhile - then one of the outriders trapped her by the rail - the poor girl flipped over the rail onto the turf - and ran the opposite way - they got her stopped on the other side - couldn't see - the ambulance came and got her - prayers for her safety.

In the second race - another horse came up incredibly lame - the whole front leg was going way out in front - the jockey immediately jumped off - they brought out the screens - NEVER a good sign - the ambulance came - they got the horse onto it - prayers for this sweet soul as well.

What really ticks me off - is the announcer never mentions a word about either incident. Evidently that is fairly common to ignore this . :(

I guess so- might interfere with the betting. Either that or it's so commonplace that nobody pays attention any more.

ZENYATTA FIRST FILLY TO WIN BREEDERS CUP!

Postby Mr. Midnight's Mom » Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:43 pm

Here's Zenyatta a big BIG filly beating the pants off a bunch of boys in this year's Breeder's Classic - first GIRL to win this very prestigious race. SHE IS AN AMAZON!

Even non-racing fans can enjoy the sheer feat of athleticism and grace and strength in this girl.

And MM has already told me he wants to dance with her after seeing this one!

Zenyatta is one GORGEOUS girl. MM has good taste in women. Positive thoughts that she does not become a throw-away. We'll all be trying to adopt her.

Fortunately for her, as long as her reproductive organs work, she won't be thrown away. They'll probably harvest every egg or embryo she produces and transplant it into some poor old broodmare so they can cash in on her impressive genetic material.

Isn't it strange that they require a live cover for the actual breeding - but then use surrogates? seems a bit irrational to me. And yeah - they'll squeeze every drop of everything out of her :( Wouldn't she be a SUPER dressagey dancing horse! though.

I don't think those little white arena fences would contain her very well! As Springsteen would say, "Baby, I was born to run."

Beth - you may be right about the arena not containing her - BUT OH MY GOODNESS - just imagine what she'd be like if it could! :)

Kaitlynn- yep I've always said - don't let me come back in my next life as a brood mare ! YIKES! Hopefully, the great Zenyatta will not go down that road.

Well Miss Zenyatta is a big girl - so a horse as tall as her might need a tall jockey :)

Good question. Most owners don't ride cuz they are too big! Ever see a skinny owner in the winner's circle ;)
